When you are shopping in supermarkets, you have POWER. You can make a difference with what you REFUSE to buy.
In most countries of the world, chickens are kept inhumanely. Long gone are the days when the Sunday roast chicken was a real treat. Chicken is the most consumed animal in the world.
In Western countries, chickens can be reared from tiny, cute, fluffy chicks to full-grown birds for slaughter in as little as forty-two days! Often, they are kept in dreadful conditions. In the UK battery farming has been banned, but shed farming is often hardly better.
You will know if the chicken you are buying has been cruelly raised if you can see signs of hock burn – or bits cut out to hide hock burn. This could be to the “parson’s nose” or the legs. Take it to the manager and say “I refuse to buy this!”
If we all protest, the stores will put pressure on the farmers and only buy stock that is raised humanely.

Much as I am loathe to disagree with you, I have worked in Chicken Sheds here in France, and believe me, the chickens are well cared for. Even when fully grown they are not overcrowded. This is mainly due to the value of the stock.
I grant that there are always a few runts and the odd damaged bird, but they are few and far between. And I have seen Farmers standing guard to make sure that his chickens aren’t badly treated when lifted for slaughter because his damaged birds will be rejected.
The lifting is always done in the middle of the night with lowered lights to keep the birds calm and to cause as little stress as possible. They are then slaughter almost immediately. I agree that this is done in the name of profit. But what else is to be done? People want cheap chicken.
Sorry if this offends, but I do know what I am talking about.

I believe you DO know what you are talking about. But you were lucky to work in a humane place. But not all of them are. In the UK, there are some horrendous farms – even with all our legislation! https://youtu.be/d9cEoSDyfLo

Sorry. I was writing a reply and then lost it, and can’t be bothered o do it again.
I watched ten minutes of the video, which is all that I needed.
I didn’t just work in just one place, but half way around Brittany. And never saw anything dreadful. Turkeys included.
Someone has been feeding you Animal Rights Bull Shit. I saw these chicks being reared from day one of their birth. I was there when they were tipped out of the box into a pristine shed, with everything they could possibly have needed.
This is meat, for Christ’s sake.
But if anyone wants hand reared and free range chicken, then pay the price.
Sorry. This makes me so angry. I must have helped to clear at least a hundred chicken sheds in my time. And I never saw anything beyond good care for the stock.
But if you really want to get a bit upset then look to The Egg Production Sheds. They are not at all pleasant. Your average breakfast egg does cause some distress to me.

Well, I don’t know about France but here in the UK – battery farming for egg production is banned. I lived on a poultry farm as a kid. But that was the olden days before huge farms. The program you watched was Channel 4 Dispatches – good reputation. But later, they did show footage taken by some animal rights group and the farm lost it’s accreditation. I am not anti-animal rights. They have made some people THINK.But sometimes they do daft things.We eat free range eggs only – and sometimes local eggs – and they DO taste better.You can taste “happy” don’t you think?
