Fires in the Sahara

We have just finished watching Michael Palin’s Sahara

It is a fascinating series – but probably not available to people in other countries. The BBC are quite jealous of their property.

At one stage Michael Palin is sitting in his Taureg robes around a fire, at night, whilst on a caravan across the dunes.

I suddenly remembered a flight to the UK from Africa many years ago, just when smoking was banned on planes.  I could smell the delicious fragrance of cigarette smoke, yet we, in the cabin weren’t allowed to smoke. On the way to the loo in the early hours when most people were sleeping, I discovered the source! The cabin crew was sitting in a curtained area, relaxing and smoking. They invited me in and I smoked a cigarette with them.

They told me the plane was very low over the Sahara, saving fuel whilst we slept. They said “Look out of the window!”

I saw the most beautiful sight.

There were tiny fires, scattered and  glowing in the darkness, and now and again small settlements, iridescent with jewel-like firelight.Related image

I'm someone also pounding the Path, just like you.. I'm retired, going into Old Age and loving my life. I'm hoping to remain happy and well for as long as possible. Old Age is not SO bad - yet!
