It always seems so dreadful to me, that once, when I was young, premature babies usually died. Now they are rescued very early and put into incubators and a lot of them come out with awful deformities and life debilitating conditions. It seems that quality of life is not considered in our desperate drive to keep things alive.
But I was somewhat inspired to see this. I wondered if prem babies would suffer less, if they could just go on developing in amniotic fluid till full term?
I don’t know. But this could be the future!
The successful animal testing suggests the first-of-its-kind incubation might work in the case of extremely premature babies.
The results were published in the journal Nature Communications, courtesy of a team of scientists from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The device, called Biobag, resembling an oversized ziplock bag connected to various tubes that contain blood and fluids, could help to bring premature human babies to term outside the uterus. As of now, it has only been tested on sheep.
