The Last Furlong

Comments on the race of life.

This might solve the number of prems with physical problems?

It always seems so dreadful to me, that once, when I was young, premature babies usually died. Now they are rescued very early and put into incubators and a lot of them come out with awful deformities and life debilitating conditions. It seems that quality of life is not considered in our desperate drive to keep things alive.

But I was somewhat inspired to see this. I wondered if prem babies would suffer less, if they could just go on developing in amniotic fluid till full term?

I don’t know. But this could be the future!

Scientists breed a baby sheep in an artificial womb

The successful animal testing suggests the first-of-its-kind incubation might work in the case of extremely premature babies.

The results were published in the journal Nature Communications, courtesy of a team of scientists from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The device, called Biobag, resembling an oversized ziplock bag connected to various tubes that contain blood and fluids, could help to bring premature human babies to term outside the uterus. As of now, it has only been tested on sheep.

I'm someone also pounding the Path, just like you.. I'm retired, going into Old Age and loving my life. I'm hoping to remain happy and well for as long as possible. Old Age is not SO bad - yet!

  3. The missing factor is LOVE. Prems get physical care but how many nurses have or create time for the love and bonding that such a tiny mite needs? I am convinced there would be less deformity in these babies if they got the love they need. That’s what MUMs are for – to give 24/7 LOVE &CARE.

    • Yes – good point. But if you havent physically developed parts of you because you got born too soon, you could go on growing like the lambs do. Maybe mothers could be with their developing babies, loving them, like they would do if the babies were inside them? Love IS the thing!

  4. I agree. I just remember how Claire had to painfully pump out the milk for Rhiannon and then take the bus and walk to the hospital and could only spend a short while as she had to be back for Maegan when she came back from school. Exhausting. Not surprised that Rhiannon has scoliosis. Although she had a back op to put in pins that seems to help.
