The Furlongs have a tradition. We have a little leather bag in which, every year, on this day, we put a piece of coal (for warmth), a coin (for wealth), food (for enough to eat), a light (for illumination), a party popper (for play/joy laughter).
After midnight, Mr Furlong goes outside and knocks on our door – no, actually he rings the doorbell! I invite him in. And he gives me the little leather bag, which I receive with new year’s wishes and welcoming hugs.
It is hung in the hall till this day next year, when we do it all over again. The coins have multiplied to £11:50 +.
Silly really.
But we’ve had some very good years.
Hope 2016 will be blessed too.
We wish you a Happy New Year and Hogmanay.
