I was always intrigued by Za Za Gabor. She was beautiful and outrageous. Fascinatingly and humorously superficial in fact.
But in her later years she’s had a really hard time. She’s lost her beauty, her money, her lovers. That’s a dreadful thing to happen to anyone – especially to someone to whom it was all part of the image.
Physically she’s had a bad time of it after a debilitating car crash, a hip replacement that almost killed her and a leg amputation. And that was in her eighties!
Her husband and daughter have continually squabbled about her. Her daughter died this year. They have not been happy people. But Za Za is still with us at ninety-eight suffering total dementia and cannot speak. She eats from a feeding tube.
To young people who never knew her, she just looks like any ugly old lady now. But, to me, she is still a star. I hope she can soon be released from life to entertain the angels.
I think she’d like that.
