This Last Furlong blog, comes out at 01.01 am every day with seldom a miss. I have two other blogs on linked topics that come out every second day. One comes out on even days at 02.02am and the other, on odd-numbered days at 03.03am. You can see I must be pretty anal about times and days!
If you re-blog in WordPress, you have no control on the timing or category of the re-blog. If you hit re-blog, it simply detonates it. On The Last Furlong, I seldom re-blog. If the post is not from another WordPress site, you can’t.
On my linked sites, the one on odd days at 03.03 I do re-blog because it is a sharing site. But a lot of posts there come from sites that are not WordPress. So what do you do?
If you use Addthis, you have the option to share on WordPress. Also, you have the option to save the post you want to share as a draft so you can properly categorise it and publish it when you are ready. But if you are not careful, all you get is a link – unless you highlight a section that you wish to form the first paragraph or two.
If you simply “copy and paste” as you sometimes have to if you do not use Addthis, or you are using a newspaper article, it is the most important thing to use the quote tool and especially have a link to the original.
And the last thing is that some beautiful pieces of writing can be spoiled by chunking them up as excerpts and adding your own thoughts. Sometimes the whole thing is stunning as it is. That’s why it inspired you in the first place.
To those who post on Facebook, you absolutely muffle anyone who wants to comment on your blog, if they don’t have a Facebook account.
Re-blogging is not an easy thing – it takes thought and time. It’s not a “lazy” option if you do it right.
