Smoking science

I was astonished to find on Mr Furlong’s new annual “birthday” medical review that he was labelled as an “ex-smoker” and that put him in a high risk category. Mr Furlong gave up smoking over thirty yeas ago! When he dies, he will be classified as a “smoker”.

The people who are dying of old age now, are, many millions of them, ex-smokers. They will be counted as smokers in scientific studies.

Smoking protects from Melanomas in men, head and neck melanomas in women, Alzheimers, Parkinsons, asthma in smokers’ children, certain stomach disorders, and several other conditions now on the rise, all because less people smoke. Nicotine is a powerfully beneficial chemical found in cigarettes, which is the protective agent in tobacco.

Smoking might shave off ten years of your life (new Australian Study here)

“In Australia, up to two-thirds of deaths in current smokers can be attributed to smoking. Cessation reduces mortality compared with continuing to smoke, with cessation earlier in life resulting in greater reductions.”

but nicotine is not the cause.

I'm someone also pounding the Path, just like you.. I'm retired, going into Old Age and loving my life. I'm hoping to remain happy and well for as long as possible. Old Age is not SO bad - yet!

  1. Hahahaha. Good one. Although not particularly funny. I would have been locked up in a looney bin yolks ago if I didn’t smoke.
