Mr Furlong was remembering landing in England in the fifties with his Mum and his sister and the first thing she did was to buy raincoats for them all. Mr Furlong and his sister were coming home with Mum to be shown to his family. They had emigrated to Africa in 1948 when the children were babies.
Well, having lived in Africa, they wouldn’t have had raincoats. I knew no one who had a raincoat in Africa. Most people in Africa would never think of using a raincoat!
Africa is hot. Raincoats are hot. It rarely rains day after day, after day, after day, in Africa. It rains. And boy, does it rain! But it rains all in a dump. And after that, the sun comes out and it’s steaming hot again. No one needs raincoats.
They use UMBRELLAS.
