The Last Furlong

Comments on the race of life.

Children are older now – educated and fearful, perhaps they’ll die young?

If you are old like Mr Furlong and me, you will have noticed how the group “children” have got older. The Anti Smoking Lobby have changed one idea of “children” i.e kids under twelve to “children and young people” with a cut off of 25 years old.

Education has made childhood grow to about the same proportion. Many parents our age – ahem – probably slightly younger – have their  university educated “kids” living at home for lack of money/jobs.

In the 1950s and 1960s, many ‘young people’ started work around the age of 15. They became adult, smoking, drinking and having sex just like other adults who earned a living.  But woe betide the girls  who fell pregnant.

It seems that children today may now fall pregnant. In the UK they have a wonderful safety net,  non judgmental support and free housing, yet all of society in the UK  has to suffer the constant bleating about “children and young people” smoking! That non-problem has now become a problem.

Don’t you think it’s strange that the kids who smoked the most, grown up, are now the very generation that simply refuse to die young and are going to cost the state a fortune?

Educate and terrify seems a really good plot to make sure the kids of today will die young from frustrated delusions of university education being the key to success and of fright that the least whiff of a cigarette will hospitalise them, if not kill them directly.  Taking drugs and drinking is the pleasure of choice now for the young – smoking is OUT.
